Comparison of implementation approaches

SAP distinguishes between two approaches for the implementation of S/4HANA. The SAP Greenfield and the SAP Brownfield approach. Greenfield involves a completely new implementation, while brownfield involves the technical migration of the existing system. BDF EXPERTS has developed another approach: The Colouredfield approach. It combines the best of the SAP Greenfield and SAP Brownfield approaches and brings efficiency gains from the very first investment.

Greenfield

The ERP system is being completely rethought from an S/4HANA perspective. Processes are redefined and implemented. The data from the old system must be painstakingly transformed into the new system. A greenfield project usually has a very long project duration due to the redefinition of the processes and the complex data transformation and requires higher investments than a project that is carried out using the BDF EXPERTS approach. Old process knowledge is lost and the efficiency gain only starts after the new system goes live.

Brownfield

With the brownfield approach, the old system is migrated to the new S/4HANA system. This is a 1:1 transformation of the database tables. The possibilities and opportunities offered by SAP S/4HANA are not utilised because the processes remain the same as before. As a result, it is likely that the efficiency of the processes will actually decrease after a changeover to S/4HANA because the requirements of the new system are not 100 per cent fulfilled.

Colouredfield approach

The Colouredfield approach combines the best of the Greenfield and Brownfield approaches. First, process optimisation is carried out on the old system with regard to the new possibilities under SAP S/4HANA. By taking up the old processes, process knowledge is not lost but continues to be utilised. Thanks to the step-by-step optimisation, you will already notice initial successes such as greater process efficiency or reduced time expenditure during the project term. Technical data migration takes place flexibly at any time after all your processes have been optimised.

Low risk

Once the process optimisation has been completed, you are ready for the changeover to SAP S/4HANA at any time, but can also continue to work with ECC.

Early efficiency gains

Even after process optimisation, you benefit from faster and less complex processes. This saves you time and money.
