Defence and armaments

Major defence technology projects are highly complex, run for a long time and must remain traceable over decades. BDF EXPERTS maps the complete configuration management in SAP, from the first requirement through development, procurement and production to service, with SAP Product and Process Governance (SAP PPG) at the core of the configuration structure.

What challenges the defence industry in SAP.

Four central challenges that we address in SAP together with companies in the defence technology sector.

Mastering the complexity of long-running projects

Submarines, naval vessels and defence systems take many years to build. Product development is spread across numerous systems, including ERP, authoring and requirements systems, and must be brought together consistently.

Ensuring configuration integrity

A product’s functional and physical characteristics must remain consistent throughout the entire life cycle. Earlier configurations must be reproducible and traceable at any time.

Tracking changes end to end

For safety-critical systems, every change must be traceable. Dependencies and impacts must be identifiable, documented and forwarded to the affected objects.

Guaranteeing service over decades

After delivery, product structures must be maintained throughout the entire period of use, including the serialised as-built status and replaceable individual components.

Our answer: SAP PPG as the nucleus of the configuration structure.

In the defence industry, our focus lies clearly in the Digital Supply Chain. With SAP PPG, we create comprehensive configuration management that brings together the information distributed across the system landscape, via middleware, into one central configuration structure in the SAP system, from the very first requirement through to service after delivery.

▌ DIGITAL SUPPLY CHAIN, THE FOCUS OF THIS INDUSTRY

The PPG node, with its PPG variants, forms the nucleus of the configuration structure. It brings together various SAP objects, information and processes: as a configuration unit, it links material masters, document info records and metadata. Project-neutral and project-specific configuration units can be combined and detailed all the way down, via the Last Replaceable Unit, to the smallest replaceable component.

On the basis of this structure, we plan, define and generate baselines for every milestone in the product life cycle. Baselines can be compared with one another or with the current structure, and differences are presented transparently. Direct integration with logistics, quality management and as-built status completes the overall picture, right through to the representation of the manufactured product in its serialised as-built status.

  • SAP PPG, configuration structure as the central configuration unit (CU) in the product life cycle
  • SAP iPPE, integrated product and process engineering structures
  • Baseline management, planning, generation and comparison of configuration baselines
  • Digital Supply Chain consulting, end-to-end processes from requirement to service

▌ CORPORATE FINANCE & TREASURY, OPTIONAL FOR GROUP-WIDE STRUCTURES

Where companies in the defence industry wish to develop their financial and liquidity management alongside their configuration management, we add our treasury expertise, for example in long-running project financing and group-wide structures.

  • Corporate Finance & Treasury consulting, financial management in complex group structures

▌ CASE STUDY / SUCCESS STORY

From practice: thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the leading European systems supplier for submarines and naval vessels, is consistently pursuing its goal of the „digital shipyard“. To master the complexity of product development in technologically demanding and long-running projects, BDF EXPERTS introduced comprehensive configuration management using SAP PPG and SAP iPPE. The result: a complete configuration structure for the product within the SAP system, which brings information from distributed systems together in one central place and significantly reduces the effort needed to obtain information.

„By applying the PPG structure, it is now possible to map everything comprehensively, from the first requirement through development, procurement and production to service.“

, Nils Hülsmann, IT Project Lead Configuration Management, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH
